Mirvac Sebel Mandurah

Project Info

Background

The Point, Mandurah is a development which consists of two apartment buildings and one hotel, the design of the hotel being undertaken in-house by Mirvac Design themselves.

Objectives

ASF was commissioned to fit-out the entire lobby and reception area of the hotel except for carpeting and loose furniture.

Features included an internet station, wall panelling, mesh screens made with a timber and brass frame as well as solid timber doors and a small bar for the conference room.

Challenges

The design featured a lot of Spotted Gum timber, which was not readily available in Western Australia and had to be sourced from the eastern states.

A distinctive feature is the reception desk, which was partially constructed from recycled timber, salvaged from an old wharf. It also features stone faces on the sides as well as the hob top.

The challenge was to preserve the integrity of the old timber so that it could be used as part of the design to capture the previous history of the area.

The most important feature was the wall panelling, which was made from timber of varying shapes and sizes. The real challenge was making it appear as a continuous piece of timber that ran the length of the lobby walls.

The mounting of the panels had to be precise and exact to ensure the timber and backing panels were aligned.

Outcomes

The client was so pleased with the work that they expressed an intention to work with ASF again. In fact the Mandurah job was the third Mirvac project undertaken by ASF, who hope to develop a longstanding relationship with Mirvac.
